The Magic of a Kind Word

 Free stories for kids +4

By Charky Ahmed

It was a bright and beautiful morning, and Adam was very happy after opening his small savings box and finding the amount of money he had been dreaming of.

It was the price of a story collection sold at the nearby library. Adam jumped from his spot, determined to go to the library to acquire that book that had attracted him with its cover and provocative title.

However, he remembered that his mother would not allow him to go out alone as she feared for his safety.

Despite knowing his mother’s usual response, Adam tried his shot:

Adam: “Mama, can I go to the library, please?”

His mother smiled kindly and said, “Of course, my dear. Go, but do not be late. I will be watching from the window.”

Adam thanked her and left the house happily. He hurried to the library, excited to dive into the story collection.

However, when he arrived, Adam was surprised to see a long line of people waiting in front of the small neighborhood library.

Everyone had lots of things to get: books, school supplies, stories, novels, newspapers… He greeted them politely: “Good morning,” he said, and patiently waited for his turn. While Adam waited, one of the people in line spoke to him: “Step forward, my boy, and take what you want; I bet you will ask for a pen or a notebook… We all have so many things to get.” Adam: “I just want to buy a story collection, please.” The customer smiled and said to the others: “Please, let this polite and well-mannered boy go first so he can get his book.”

Adam stepped forward, amazed, as everyone praised him and made way.

He returned home and told his mother what had happened, and she softly said Mother: “And who would refuse a gift, my son?”

Adam: “How, Mom? I do not understand!” Mother: “A kind word is a gift, my dear son, and you used a polite phrase, ‘if you can…’. This attitude shows your good manners and respect for others, and it will help you enjoy the books and stories you read even more. Well done, my son, and congratulations on your new storybook!” .

Moral Question: Is reading a form of refinement? And does it teach us to respect others?
